It appears as though Wayne Rooney may miss the World Cup after injuring his foot late in a game Manchester United was already being embarassed in, 3-0, courtesy of Chelsea, which, oh, by the way, secured the Premiership title for Jose Mourhino's team. Talk about a bad day if you're Rooney.
Even worse if you're an England fan, John Terry was also hurt in the game, perhaps seriously. Ironically, it came on a challenge from Rooney. You can't make this stuff up.
England's World Cup hereos-to-be are crumbling. If I'm Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard, I'm laying low for a few weeks, not even touching a ball until I've stepped foot in Germany. English dreams are suddenly falling apart piece by piece, injury by injury. Which is sad, actually. Not that I'm an England fan, but the Brits shape up as not only a favorite in Germany this summer, but, on paper at least, one of the most exciting teams. Rooney and Michael Owen up top backed by a midfield of Lampard, Gerrard, and Mr. Posh Spice is most definitely enticing. Talk about a collection of dudes who simply produce all being, more or less, in their primes.
And with Terry skippering the backline? Well, that is the makings of a filthy team. Filthy. With a few lucky breaks as far as how the knockout rounds shape up - which never seems to happen for England, by the way - the Brits look as strong as anybody. But will it even happen now?
If I'm Sven Goran Erickson, I keep Rooney on the 23-man roster and hope he can recover for the later rounds, which Erickson, apparently, just might do.
